Christmas in Markerville a Sweet Success!

PrintE-mail

County of Red Deer: Wednesday, 18 November 2009 11:26

Christmas in Markerville was a 'sweet' success for our non-profit society as we were able to raise money to assist with the expenses associated with operating the Historic Markerville Creamery Museum, Historic Fensala Hall, Historic Markerville Lutheran Church and the Tindastoll Cemetery. All credit to the success of this event goes to the extraordinary volunteers who give so much of themselves to the Stephan G. Stephansson Icelandic Society in Markerville.

Sales of Cookie Boxes were halted briefly on Saturday afternoon when we actually ran out of cookies and had to put the call out to our volunteers!

By Sunday morning we had 500 dozen fresh cookies delivered (some of them still warm!) and were able to fill our Cookie Walk again. In total, we had over 1,700 dozen homemade cookies donated by our incredible volunteers - that's over 20,000 cookies!

The vendors at both locations did a wonderful job of providing a variety of shopping choices for over 1,200 visitors. Some of our vendors even baked cookies for us on Saturday night! Thank you to everyone who supported this festive fundraising event.

Alberta Sweet 16 Wins Alto Award

(Central Alberta) – On Monday, October 26 in Banff the Central Alberta Tourism Committee, under the marketing campaign “Alberta Sweet 16” won the 2009 provincial Alto Award for Marketing Partnership.

Central Alberta Tourism Committee Wins an Alto!

“We are thrilled to win this award.  It is great to be recognized for the excellent marketing partnership that we have in Central Alberta. This year we had 10 municipalities who came together and pooled resources in order to further promote all the awesome attractions and events we have right here in our own backyard,” stated Dean Schweder, Chair, Central Alberta Tourism Committee and Tourism & Economic Development Coordinator, Town of Rocky Mountain House.

The 10 committee members include the following municipalities and tourism organizations; Innisfail, Lacombe, Ponoka, Red Deer (Tourism Red Deer), Red Deer County, Rimbey, Rocky Mountain House, Stettler, Sylvan Lake, and Wetaskiwin.

From May long weekend to September long weekend, Alberta Sweet 16 promotes a feature event, along with all the other great activities that are going on each weekend in Central Alberta.

The marketing campaign is centered on their website (www.albertasweet16.com), which promotes local events and attractions through a very user friendly year round calendar.  “Tourism is the fourth largest industry in Alberta and generates over $5 billion in revenues each year.  Therefore, it is crucial that Central Alberta remains competitive in this industry and that we continue to send the message that our area is a wonderful tourism destination,” concluded Schweder.

Sylvan Lake: Tuesday, 02 June 2009 12:44

The 12th Annual VW Car Show and Shine was a blast for every car enthusiast who attended and saw the many makes and models of Volkswagen vehicles on display in Sylvan Lake on Sunday, May 31st. Cars from all over the province and as far as Saskatchewan and Manitoba came to participate in the day’s event from 10 am to 4 pm. The event’s success is mainly contributed to the zest the owners have for their restored, maintained and revved up vehicles. The great weather also helped draw fans and increased the number of participants from just 85 last year to 135 this year. The event, held in Red Deer in previous years, was hosted by Club Veedub which operates out of Calgary, the Air Riders from Edmonton and the Red Deer sect, Dub Central. If you would like more information on more VW events or on joining one of the clubs, visit www.clubveedub.ca or www.airriders.ca
