Strong Year for Tourism Red Deer
City of Red Deer: Tuesday, 13 January 2009 10:07
(RED DEER) – Today, Tourism Red Deer released its statistics for 2008. This past year saw the number of travelers to the Visitor Information Centre (VIC) increase and in the process set a new record.
“Our local tourism industry did well this year,” commented Darren Kuz, Executive Director, Tourism Red Deer. Overall the visitor tally for the VIC set a new record with 74,637. That is significantly up from 68,714 (2007), and surpasses the old record of 73,027 (2006).
“I think it was a combination of great weather, a regional marketing partnership (Alberta Sweet 16), a provincial marketing campaign and high gas prices that helped to make this a very successful year,” stated Kuz.
In 2008 Tourism Red Deer determined that 74% (80% 2007) of all Canadian visitors to the VIC were from Alberta. The total number of Canadian visitors was 82% (84% 2007) and out of the 18% (16% 2007) that were international travelers, 9% (8% 2007) were American. According to Kuz, “This data helps us to reconfirm where our markets are and allows us to properly allocate our marketing resources.”
“The outlook for tourism in Red Deer remains positive. With our geographical location, amenities and attractions our city and region will continue to benefit from this province’s fourth largest industry, which is tourism,” concluded Kuz.
